Today, our cattle carry the prefixes and herd names of South Shadow (SSA), Boundary (DLD), Kay Dee (KD) - the later two being our children and their spouses, the third generation, who are actively involved in the ranch business.
Of the thirty Jay En Dee cows originally puchased from Mom and Dad, two were flushed and one of them just delivered her 13th consecutive calf - a S A V Networth 4200 heifer.
Four decades of continuous genetic improvement of each generation, is reliably and consistently producing quality herd sires and females. Our goal is to provide our customers with the most progressive and profitable genetics possible. Genetics that excel in the economically relevant traits of efficient beef production.
· The cows are medium framed, have depth, length, soundness and provide lots of milk in well shaped udders.
· Eleven of the twelve cow families originated from the 1960 era of Jay En Dee females.
· All but one cow was born and raised in the Family's purebred herd.
· 60 females are sired by home-raised bulls.
· Elite Cows - we are extremely proud of our 13 "range cows" which have been identified by the Canadian Angus Association as Elite Cows. Their production records result from the ability to convert grass forage into beef without the help of additional rations or creep feed.
South Shadow has the opportunity to test the genetics of their registered herd on a large scale. By running our bulls on our commercial black angus cow herd, we can view the impact our breeding choices make in the cow-calf business.
